1980 Harley Ironhead Budget Bobber
"Grasshopper" from Mertzig, Luxemburg, made available these pictures of his Harley budget Bobber which has a 1980 XLH Ironhead engine in 1974 XLCH Sportster frame which he bought as a basket case and had rebuilt by his friend Rainer of HSI Custom Bikes in Irrel, Germany.
Grasshopper: "Hello from Luxemburg/Europe! Here is my rebuild Ironhead 1974 XLCH with a 1980 engine, W&W WL springer fork, S&S super B carb, Andrews cams and many homemade parts."
"Thanxs and great Season for all Sportster Riders, and big Thanxs for your f...... good Website. Sorry for my bad English! and have fun with this pics."
Well Grasshopper, we all thank you for the pictures, and please don't worry about your English: it's better than our German ;o)
Grasshopper: "The frame and papers are from a 1974 XLCH and the engine an 1980 XLH. I bought the engine, gastank, carburator and the damaged 1980 frame from a neighbour for 500 dollars.(Basket case) The original 1974 frame came from a shop in Germany."
Grasshopper: "The paintjob is satin black, which is better to clean, and it is gasoline resistant."
When these photos were taken, he was waiting for a smaller hotrod-style air cleaner.
Grasshopper's Budget Bobber during Building
Before fixing everything in place, Grasshopper temporarily assembled the bike so he could get an idea of the overall style he liked best. After that the real build was done.
This is a real low-budget bobber. Many parts are OEM. Apes, sissybar and controls are self made. The frame was modified to accommodate the seat springs.
Well, Grasshopper, we really look forward to see the photos of your finished Sportster Bobber in action!
While this Sportster motorcycle has a 1974 Harley title, and while we recognize that this Bobber has a 1974 frame and title, on this Bobber website we classify the various rebuilt motorcycles by the engine year, and not by the frame year or by what the papers say.
It's a matter of choice.
